HOARD! & HODOR!
This last weekend was the weekend of dragons. No-- Dragons. Capital D. Because there were a lot of them.
First, I bought Season 2 of Game of Thrones...and watched it all. Yup. 10 hours of epicness, that resulted in a television-induced coma and mild depression. Sure, it was hard to get over some of the unnecessary changes they made that didn't add anything to the story or surprise fans that read the book. In fact, in some cases the changes made things more confusing, and harder to understand character motivation. Bah. Nevertheless, I still think they did a great job. Book two was hard to get through, and the show did a good job of keeping up the momentum from Season/Book one, and not getting too bogged down with internal dialogue (which wouldn't make sense in this format anyway). Plus- dragons! Dany's story really picks up at this point. And I'm super excited to see what happens next. Although it's not looking good. I think this giant series is an unfortunately mega-entertaining no-win scenario. Martin has deviously made us love and hate every character (except for Joffrey. He is the worst!). And has no problem killing off the single person we grow to love more than hate at the moment we realize it. Gah. I predict this ending with the dragons and Others destroying everything...or maybe its one of those series that just wont end. There is no way to put a bow on this hot mess.
Second, since we're on the topic of hot mess, and kind of dragons, let me tell you about a new favorite game of mine- Hoard!
The Fiance was nice enough to gift me this game on Steam (btw, I heart Steam). And it's amazingly fun. Super simple set up, took no time at all to learn the objective and controls, and is just jolly good fun. I love that it plays like an old school arcade game, and could really be played with a joystick and A & B buttons. And the tabletop "background" is clever. I totally want this kind of awesome in my D&D experience!
The game play: so far I've done their versus and co-op games, and haven't explored anything else (if there is anything else). Each game is set-up with a dragon cave, and each player is a dragon- duh. Anyway, you fly around burning villages, farms, towers, etc. Each place you destroy grants you coin. The bigger the place is the more coin- and the more enemies (archers, knights, theives, etc). It's a blast, and totally gets more chaotic as it progresses. You also get to level up the more coin you take back to your lair, and it's fun to see just how much the gameplay changes based on the perks you pick. I'm not usually a big fan of versus (sore loser here), but this was still fun. I like that you can "win over" the villages to have them give you coin. And stealing the giant gem that fell from the ogre your opponent destroyed is wickedly awesome.
Overall I highly recommend it for a "something different" to enjoy a couple hours. And cheer up after a Game of Thrones marathon. Seriously.
Raaawrrr!
